Today's Omaha Woman
Today's Omaha Woman magazine was launched by the Women's Fund of Greater Omaha in March 1997. The magazine's mission is to educate readers about issues the Women's Fund has found through its research to be important to area women. Topics the magazine has covered include child care, pay equity, domestic violence, women-owned businesses and a variety of women's health issues.
Following is a summary of the top stories from the Women in Medicine issue. Pick up a copy of the magazine on the newsstand (see distribution locations at bottom of page) to read these articles and more:
Heart Matters
Dr. Shirley Huerter - Advocating for Women and Heart Disease Prevention
A career as a cardiologist allows Shirley L. Huerter, M.D., to do what she loves best - care for others. "I'm a relationship person, and I treasure it," she says. "I have patients I've been following since 1992, and I really look forward to them coming into the room (during office visits) and seeing pictures of their grandchildren."
Cancer Fighter
Dr. Julie Vose - Combining Cancer Research with Patient Care
For Julie M. Vose., M.D., a career in medicine is even better than she envisioned. The daughter of a pathologist, Vose spent summers as a teenager working in her father's laboratory where she became fascinated with cancer. School projects often focused on medical topics.
Trend Setter
Dr. Susan Westcott - Helping Women's Health Care Evolve
A lot has changed in 34 years. Just ask Susan Westcott, M.D., and board certified OBGYN. "When I graduated from high school in 1976 I did not envision ever becoming a physician," she says. "I had grown up in the Western part of the state, went to a small school and never thought competitively I could be a candidate."
Specialized Care
Dr. Rebecca McCrery - 'Every Patient Is Unique'
Good health is often a team effort, pairing patients with capable physicians. Maybe that's why so many Omaha women are seeking Rebecca (Becky) McCrery, M.D., board certified OBGYN, urogynecologist for their specific health concerns.
