Desperately Seeking Services
More Women Find Themselves in Need of Shelter, Food and Other Necessities

At one point, Ella Harrison turned off the ringer on her phone because she couldn't bear the never-ending calls from bill collectors. Her credit cards were maxed out. Her car repossessed. The bills were piling up. She couldn't find a job, and she worried constantly about being able to feed and clothe her two teens. A call from a concerned social worker led her to the Lydia House in east Omaha, where she and her two children took shelter while trying to rebuild their lives.

Fighting Crime with Awareness
How to Stay Safe in an Uncertain Economy

Historically there's been a continuing debate on the significance of a possible correlation between a sinking economy and rising crime rates. It stands to reason that with the added stresses of unemployment, loss in services and other such negative effects of a recession straining Americans, an upswing in crime becomes more probable as people are pushed to the edge.

Violence Against Women
Economic Issues Are Often Paramount in Domestic Violence Situations

For women trying to flee abusive relationships, the economic downturn can be a major stumbling block.
