Today's Omaha Woman
Today's Omaha Woman magazine was launched by the Women's Fund of Greater Omaha in March 1997. The magazine's mission is to educate readers about issues the Women's Fund has found through its research to be important to area women. Topics the magazine has covered include child care, pay equity, domestic violence, women-owned businesses and a variety of women's health issues.
Following is a summary of the top stories from the "Women of Courage" issue.
Finding Help: Immigrant Women Overcome Obstacles with Assistance:
Cultural differences, language barriers and legal hurdles are just a few of the challenges facing immigrant women. Here in Omaha, numerous agencies offer services to help these newcomers
adjust to their adopted homeland.
“Most are ready, willing and able to contribute to our society,” says Dave Pantos, executive director, Legal Aid of Nebraska. “Our job is to get them over that hurdle so they can be self-sufficient, raise their family and contribute to society.”

Volunteers Strengthen Our Community
Omaha is a city that gives. Call it work ethic, civic pride or just being neighborly, the fact is that whether the economy is healthy or rocky, Omahans are decidedly united when it comes to giving back. In fact, Nebraska ranks No. 2 nationally in volunteerism (Utah is No. 1).
Kids Volunteering
How to Get Them Interested and Excited
Kids may be smaller, younger and less experienced than adults, but they can still make a difference in their communities through volunteering and philanthropy - and learn to love it at a young age so that they keep giving back. "If the agencies, kids and parents work together, we can make a big difference," says Raeanna Kuzma, director of volunteer engagement for United Way of the Midlands.
Educating Uganda
Local Woman Dedicated to Building Schools
There are few things Karen Van Dyke loves more than spending a couple of weeks in the Republic of Uganda, walking 10 hours a day to visit makeshift schools and sleeping in a shack with one bat-infested latrine. Her face lights up as she talks about the things she sees there; about her hopes for the children and their families.

Helping Haiti
Local Nurse Travels to Volunteer in the Relief Effort
In the wake of the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti last Jan. 12, Ingrid Johnson was glued to her television. Hundreds of thousands of Haitians died, were injured and/or left homeless by the catastrophic quake. As it all unfolded before her eyes - nasty aftershocks, the death toll mounting and the sheer destruction of it all being broadcast live - she knew she has to turn off the TV and act.
