On the Cover

The cover art was produced by Visual Artist Betni Kalk. The boldly colored painting has a hot pink under-layer peaking through the portraits of Aunt Melody, Cousin Gabe and baby Nasha. Her current figurative work focuses on portraits of children and their caregivers from quiet moments together to dressing up for a social occasion. Her references are photos she has taken of friends, family and self-portraits. Betni Kalk is a painter, muralist and graphic designer. She was born in Canada and lived her formative years in Papua New Guinea until her family moved back to the U.S. where she studied art and design. In addition to portraits, she searches for the sublime in nature for inspiration and paints skyscapes and abstractions of nature. She has received grants and residencies around the U.S. She lives in Omaha, NE with her partner and two daughters and teaches design at Creighton University. She accepts commissions.
